7. Christian Will Need A Second One More Match
The WWE may have been slow to pour some fuel onto this match, but eventually were able to make this match feel as important as it should be. They gave Christian recognition as one of the most successful and decorated superstars in the company today, and made him out to be among the greats, which is no more than the workhorse deserves. And, in recent weeks, Alberto Del Rio has shown his arrogant side that is a constant in his heel role, but also an aggression and frustration which has added new dimensions to his once stale character. Del Rio may not be quite breaking the mould, but I would happily defend him from some of the criticisms of the fans, as I don't think they are allowing him to change and seem to have lost interest in him. That is both the fault of the company for his lack of time to work, the fans unchanging attitude, and Del Rio's difficulty portraying an effective character. But with this performance as an example, the man can wrestle. There would have been plenty of doubts surrounding the extravagance of this match considering the fact that the same contest had been on free TV over the last few weeks. Nevertheless, the two showed an ability and desire to bring something new to the audience that would be worth the PPV price. And, to their credit, they achieved that. Del Rio would focus his attack on Christian's left arm and shoulder that he had recently had surgery on. His attack was relentless and focused, with also a number of enziguris and kicks to the face to bring pin attempts. Christian himself spent more time on the top rope than he usually does, and decided to focus more on high impact moves than the more technical of offensives. In the end, the combination was an excellent encounter with Del Rio focusing on the ground attack whilst Christian kept to the air. The finish saw Christian and Del Rio share some near finishes until Christian was able to find a moment to connect with a Spear. However, the focus of attack on the left arm meant that when Christian collided with the champion, he didn't get all of it and seemed to have done more damage to himself. The Canadian was then immediately caught in the Cross-Arm Breaker, and though he struggled to prevent the hyper-extension of the arm and tried to reach the ropes, Del Rio kept the pressure on and singled out his arm. The submission looked painful, which is what you want to see, and Christian didn't last long before tapping out. Very good match between the two, though I think that there will be a new number one contender for Night of Champions. Christian performed admirably and he certainly could hold the championship again in the right circumstances, but Del Rio should be given a firm run with the belt.
