Say Gunther runs in and it leads to John Cena retaining the Intercontinental Title…what then? John’s retirement match on 13 December is almost certainly going to end in defeat and he'll look all glum but grateful for an epic career, so having the title involved would be unnecessary. That’s being kind. Beating Cena in his final match is a big enough prize for whomever gets it (probably Gunther), meaning the title really has to go back on Dominik Mysterio at Survivor Series.

'Dirty Dom' could use the rub from a star the stature of JC. He's been on the rise since joining Judgment Day a few years ago, but people seem genuinely ready to embrace him as the future of WWE. Being able to brag about winning a nostalgic favourite like the IC Title from Cena during his retirement run would put a lot of shine on Dominik whether he's babyface or heel.

It must happen, but what if it doesn't? What if WWE fancy keeping the Intercontinental gold over Cena's shoulder so Gunther can take that and his chances of bowing out on a high away come Saturday Night's Main Event next month? That'd make the 'Ring General' look outstanding, yes, but they don't need to split focus between John's last match ever and the midcard strap.

That'd be better off back around Mysterio's waist so he can get moving on a separate feud away from all this business involving John's send off. Besides, Cena has been talking about doing the right thing and putting over some fresh stars on his way out the door. Staring at the lights for Dom Dom would reflect that.

Time to give that belt back, John boy.
