10 Amazing Comics You've Never Heard Of

8. Locke and Key

Few people know that Joe Hill, author of Horns and N0S4R2, is the son of horror-star Stephen King. Even fewer seem to have read his epic fantasy series Locke And Key.

Set in a rambling New England mansion, Locke and Key has everything you could want in a non-superhero comic; family drama, teenage angst, brutal murder, and magic doors that do everything from turning you into a ghost to switching your gender.

Although it may sound more like the plot of the next Twilight-inspired teen fantasy/drama/romance, Locke And Key is far darker, and more unpredictable, than you would imagine. Almost every keyhole in Locke House does something fantastic and unpredictable if you use the correct key, and the series explores what would really happen if you gave a group of children- a group of children with horrific PTSD, no less- access to powers that they can't understand.

Although rumoured for a number of television and film adaptations, even getting as far as a pilot for Fox, nothing seems to have come from any of these projects as of yet, at it seems as though Locke And Key is stuck in development hell for the time being.

With a (nearly) useless degree in English literature and a personal trainer qualification he's never used, Freddie spends his times writing things that he hopes will somehow pay the rent. He's also a former professional singer, and plays the saxophone and ukulele. He's not really used to talking about himself in the third person, and would like to stop now, thanks.
