10 Amazing Hellboy Spin-Offs Mignola Fans Must Read

3. Witchfinder: The Mysteries Of Unland

Victorian occult investigator Sir Edward Grey has by the continuity of the main Hellboy comics long since passed into a cursed existence in a place between life and death. He predominantly appears as a ghostly figure in Hell or observing from the sidelines amongst the fairies.

In his own on-running spin-off series, however, we get to see Sir Edward as a stoic yet dashing hero in the mold of Van Helsing from the Hammer Horror Dracula films.

The Mysteries Of Unland is not the first comic starring Sir Edward as the titular Witchfinder, but it is a good starting point for the old school British gothic horror of the series as it is largely self-contained - rather than relying on major threads of connective tissue to the wider Hellboy universe. Horror fans could happily read this story on its own and still appreciate all that it has to offer.

A rare Hellboy universe story for which Mignola himself does not receive a writing credit, The Mysteries Of Unland was instead penned by film critic and Anno Dracula novelist Kim Newman, alongside Irish horror author Maura McHugh.

As an expert in and fan of Hammer films, Newman is perfectly placed to capture that feel of a classic gothic romp in this tale of a remote marshy community producing a mysterious elixir. Sir Edward tangles with rising damp and a bunch of monstrous giant eels in a memorably slimy tale.
