10. The Boys, Volume 1: The Name Of The Game - Garth Ennis & Darick Robertson
Garth Ennis isn't exactly known for subtlety - the first book of Preacher opens with the massacre of an entire church! In The Boys, he sets his story in a world where superheroes, or supes, are real and are the most corrupt, insane creations ever. In the public eye, they're presented as good and wholesome, helping everyone and making the world safe from the evil-doers. In private, they're drugged out, whoring alcoholics who resent everyone who looks up at them and only care about money and their own sybaritic appetites. So who watches the Watchmen? The Boys. A covert CIA group led by a man called Billy Butcher who knock the supes back down when they get too rowdy. In the first volume, Hughie and his girlfriend go to a carnival for some couple-y fun, playing the stalls, winning a teddy, eating some candyfloss. And then the supes arrive. Before he knows it, Hughie's holding the severed arms of his fiancée as the rest of her becomes a red smear on a nearby wall! That's Hughie's origin story after which he's recruited by Butcher to join The Boys and take his revenge on the supes that destroyed his future. It's a pretty dark scene but it's also kinda funny assuming you know what to expect when you pick up a Garth Ennis comic!
I reads and watches thems picture stories. Wordy words follow.
