10 Awe-Inspiring Superman Moments That Prove He's DC's Greatest Hero
6. Metropolis Mailbag
Metropolis Mailbag has no epic battles. No feats of exceptional super-human strength. Sure, there is some super-strength used, but this isn't a tale that flexes muscles to show why Superman is the preeminent hero of DC Comics. This is a story about faith, compassion, and of course... mail.
Santa Claus isn't the only flying hero in red from the North Pole who has the Post Office handle his mail. This story is about Superman flying to the Metropolis Post Office for a yearly tradition he has reservations about. The Post Office holds Superman's mail for him, and every year around Christmas he tries to read as much as he can. His hesitancy lies not with the sheer volume, but with the sad knowledge that many are asking for more than he can do. No other hero has been put on this pedestal where he is treated like a god, but despite his abilities he is still a man.
Superman sifts through the mail deciding which ones he can respond to. He reunites two sisters separated decades ago by the Second World War, but also answers a request he cannot do; he takes the time to visit a family whose child wrote asking Superman to cure his father's brain cancer; he offers an apology and explanation to the poor lad, but from this sad encounter he finds a way to help another person in critical need.
Superman concludes his Santa-like day by actually bringing Santa to life for the underprivileged children of Metropolis. The expectations he faces, from being elevated to being a wish granter with unlimited abilities, shows that Superman inspires awe like no other.
