5. All-Star Superman

If Grant Morrison & Frank Quitely's Eisner Award winning series All-Star Superman was broken down into it's individual moments, it could have easily dominated these top ten spots. In the interest of reflecting on the entirety of the Man of Steel's eighty-one year run, All-Star's stellar moments will be listed together. Suffice it to say though, if you've never read this series, get on it.

The series makes the bold move of giving Superman a terminal medical condition right off the bat. Lex Luthor has manipulated Kal-El into absorbing more solar energy than he can contain resulting in his cells slowly bursting into energy, but rather than taking the typical approach and making this series about Superman's race to find a cure, the series instead shows Superman making peace with the irrefutable terms of his condition.

He sets about putting his affairs in order before the end. What is remarkable about this series is that even with this grim news from the very beginning, the series is by no means dark. Even when dealing with some melancholic elements, the series has an optimistic tone that celebrates life.

Superman's power to inspire is never more stronger than a tender moment when he takes uses some of his limited time to comfort a young woman about to commit suicide. He hugs her and tells her that she is stronger than she knows.

It's a beautiful moment that shines even among epic ones like Superman arm-wrestling Samson & Goliath, completing his historic twelve Feats, and thwarting Lex Luthor one last time. His final act is to save the Sun, where he now exists as a being of pure energy.
