3. Cyborg Superman
This villain begins as an astronaut named Hank Henshaw, employed by LexCorp. He makes his first appearance in Adventures of Superman #465, but doesn’t appear in cyborg form until Adventures of Superman #500.
On a space mission Hank’s ship is hit by a solar flare, making it crash. Eventually the residual effects of the incident cause Hank’s body to disintegrate, but he escapes total annihilation when his consciousness is transferred into a robot.
His wife rejects him in this new form so he leaves earth, going on to discover Superman’s birthing matrix, which he utilises to construct for himself a new cybernetic body. This body is imbued with Superman’s DNA, and hence his powers too.
After Superman’s death at the hands of Doomsday Cyborg Superman replaces the hero in The Reign Of The Supermen storyline, claiming that he is the original Superman with cybernetic enhancements. However, when the true Superman does eventually return from the grave, the cyborg doppelganger is defeated and usurped.
