10 Awesome Comics To Convert New Readers

5. Hellboy And The B.P.R.D. - 1952 (Dark Horse)

Hellboy And The BPRD: 1952 is a five issue miniseries that began in December 2014 and tells the story of Hellboy's very first mission with the Bureau For Paranormal Research And Defense. A bizarre series of murders and rumours of something worse lead to a Brazilian village where, in the shadow of a sixteenth-century Portuguese fortress, Hellboy and small team of agents discover something terrible. Drawn by Alex Maleev, known for his amazing work on Daredevil in the mid 2000's, and written by Hellboy creator (and comic book legend) Mike Mignola, this series serves as a perfect introduction for any reader to the world of Hellboy. The character has a certain level of recognition to the general public after Guillermo Del Toro's two well-received films and Dark Horse Comics have clearly used the notion of 'going back to the beginning' as a way of providing a natural jumping on point for any prospective new reader. Fans of horror and the supernatural will love Hellboy, but it should also appeal to anyone interested in the real world history of the occult. Hellboy has always cleverly weaved together fact and fiction seamlessly to create it's own distinct world, and this new series does that with aplomb.
