4. Locke & Key (IDW)
Mike Mignola has often stated that he was inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft whenever he created Hellboy. Another author who is clearly a fan of Lovecraftian horror is Joe Hill, the writer of Locke & Key (whose first story arc was entitled 'Welcome To Lovecraft'). Hill is a novelist, known for the likes of Heart Shaped Box and Horns (which was recently adapted into a film starring Daniel Radcliffe), so any admirer of his prose work should be intrigued enough to check out his comic book efforts. There are six collected volumes of Locke & Key available, all illustrated by the excellent Gabriel Rodriguez. IDW Publishing describes the series as the tale of a New England mansion, named Keyhouse, that features fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them. The mansion is also home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all. In essence, it is a literary horror series on a grand, otherworldly scale, written by a writer with famous parentage (Hill's father is none other than Stephen King). Read it now, people!
