10 Batmen Who Aren't Bruce Wayne
7. Elliot Ness - Batman: Scar Of The Bat
This entry doesn't involve a character we would traditionally associate with the Batman mythos adopting the persona, this Batman is an actual modern historical figure. In this Elseworlds tale Bat-man is Elliot Ness, the notorious FBI agent who took down Al Capone. Ness is probably best known as being played by Kevin Costner in the 1987 crime drama “The Untouchables”.
It is very grounded in reality (more so than the film) including actual scenarios and people as well as dialogue sourced directly from Ness himself, published here for the first time, just yaknow... with Batman.
Ness reveals how, frustrated with the limits imposed on him by being an FBI agent, he began operating outside the law to intimidate criminals and gather information.
Inspired by the titular character of the 1926 film “The Bat” (Bill Fingers real life inspiration for Batman's iconic look), he dresses in a black trench coat, slacks, and a pointy-eared mask. Ness is known as the “Bat”-Man not only because of the mask but also because he has a tendency to beat Capone's men to nearly to death with a Louisville Slugger.
Even if this isn't the best Batman story ever, it still serves as a pretty informative history lesson. It goes to show, probably more than any other entry on this list, that at his core Batman is nothing more than a man with the drive to go above and beyond to make his home a better place.
