2. Scott Free's Last Day On Earth (Mister Miracle #5)
Tom King and Mitch Gerads' Mister Miracle has taken 2017 by storm, and its most recent issue, chronicling Scott Free's last day on Earth, is its greatest - and most agonising - yet.
Having been sentenced to death by Orion (who isn't all as he seems), Free and Barda spend their last day together like any other couple would. They make love (with an apt BDSM theme), go to the fair, have an amazing meal, take in the sights, listen to their 'song' (a remarkably hilarious compilation of the Screams of the Damned from the Pit of Apokolips), and do it all over again before the time comes for Scott to go.
It's just beautiful, tragic and hilarious all at once. The fact that King and Gerads are able to capture all of these emotions in what is, let's face it, a pretty dire scenario, is absolutely phenomenal, as is the pay-off of Barda fighting for her husband to stay when the whole world's pushing against her.
It's a story of the medium's greatest romance, and a brilliant chapter in 2017's finest comic. Go read it and have a nice cry afterwards.
