Dark Horse Comics came from humble beginnings as a small publishing house out of Pegasus Books in Bend, Oregon in 1980. Within a few years, the company expanded to include some of its most enduring and beloved titles, including Hellboy, The Mask, Sin City, Boris the Bear, and Dark Horse Presents.

Eventually, Dark Horse grew even larger thanks to the acquisition of licensing rights to popular franchises, which included Star Wars, Aliens, the Predator, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and many more. Throughout all of its titles, a group of disparate universes arose, and while it isn't exactly connected in a single continuity, various elements of the stories, characters, and themes came together to become the Dark Horse Universe.

Some of the more popular elements of an interwoven universe among Dark Horse Comics' titles weaves together the Aliens, Predator, Terminator, and RoboCop universes into a single continuity. Another well-known universe within the Dark Horse Universe is the Mignolaverse, the universe that contains Mike Mignola's Hellboy and his associated titles.

Hellboy is likely the best-known creation of the Dark Horse Universe, and since his debut in 1993, Hellboy has grown to include a whole mythology with a ton of characters. In addition to Hellboy, the Mignolaverse features the B.P.R.D., Abe Sapien, Project Ragna Rok, and many more.
