10 Best Comic Book Universes

5. The Boys Universe

Marvel Universe Patrick Gleason
Dynamite Entertainment

If your exposure to The Boys has only come from the recent television series, you need to stop what you're doing and check out the comics that inspired it. Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's comics lampooned the superhero genre in the most brutal and degrading ways possible, and the TV show only covers a small portion of it.

The Boys Universe is a cynical world of corporate-sponsored superheroes who care less about the people they are supposed to be saving and more for their own images. The world Ennis and Robertson created contains only the comics featuring the characters in the books, but it is detailed and involved in ways most books aren't.

The Boys doesn't idolize superheroes, it burns them in effigy (and sometimes for real). Superheroes in The Boys Universe are less like members of the Justice League, and more like the pantheon of Greek Gods who showed up from time to time, had their way with the mortals, and left their mess for others to clean up.

With any luck, the television series will continue for several years, which should allow for a large portion of the comics to make it into the medium. Even if that happens, you should definitely read the books so you can explore this incredible universe for yourself.
