10 Best Comic Book Universes

2. Vertigo Universe

In 1993, DC Comics launched Vertigo Comics as an imprint so the company could publish more graphically violent or sexual content away from the eyes of its more innocent readers. This enabled creators to do whatever they pleased (within reason), and as a result, a new comic book universe was created!

Vertigo published content, which was far more adult than DC's regular fare, but it often featured the same writers and artists who were busy working on more commonplace titles. Once they were given license to express their creativity the way they wanted to, the concepts of damnation, murder, mayhem, and everything in-between unfolded on the pages of Vertigo Comics.

Neil Gaiman created The Sandman, which in turn helped to create additional series like Lucifer and Fables. Other series like Preacher have been adapted for television, and Stardust was made into a feature film. The same could be said of Hellblazer's Constantine, although the movie differed greatly from the comics.

Year after year, titles from Vertigo won the Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series for a number of titles. The universe the creators wove together featured characters who often showed up in each other's titles. Sadly, the Vertigo imprint will come to a close in 2020, and the Vertigo Universe will likely be absorbed into the DC Multiverse.
