10 Best Comic Books Of The Decade
6. The Wicked + The Divine - Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie & Matt Wilson
Image Comics have had a hand in publishing so many great stories over the last nine years, and undoubtedly one of the best has to be The Wicked + The Divine.
Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie first collaborated on Phonogram, another Image comic published from 2006 onwards. The writer and artist have been partners in crime ever since, turning their talents to Marvel with a fan-favourite stint on Young Avengers, where they'd be joined by colourist Matt Wilson. All three have left an indelible mark on Marvel, but perhaps the trio's most beloved series of the last decade is a little book called The Wicked + The Divine, which recently concluded after five years on the stands. (No, I'm still not over it either.)
The Wicked + The Divine presents a bold modern take on myth and legend, and focuses on a group of reincarnated deities who possess all sorts of mystical superpowers. The catch, sadly, is that they're only given two years to live - and you know deities... they rarely ever get along, so that cycle gets expedited in some instances too.
Everything about the series just comes together perfectly. The premise is fantastic, Gillen and McKelvie are tremendous together and Wilson's colours illustrate why he's become such a prolific talent this decade. It's sad to see it come to an end, but ultimately all good things do, and WickDiv was absolutely one.
