10 Best Comic Books Of The Decade

Let's face it, Batman hasn't been short of stellar runs this decade. Grant Morrison was able to wrap his stint on the character up in Batman Incorporated, while Tom King has taken command of the character for the last few years and guided them in a whole new direction. For all that those runs have impressed though, ultimately, when fans look back on the 2010s, one writer will spring to mind when they think of the Dark Knight - Scott Snyder.

Prior to taking the reigns on Batman alongside artist Greg Capullo, Snyder had garnered rave reviews on Vertigo's American Vampire, a horror comic that more or less intimated the tone the writer would apply to Gotham during his period writing Batman.

Before that fabled run during the New 52 though, Snyder was given the keys to Batman - or rather, a Batman - on Detective Comics, which focused on Dick Grayson in the wake of Bruce Wayne's return in 2010. Dubbed Black Mirror, the comic saw Snyder team up with artists Jock and Francesco Francavilla to deliver a truly nightmarish take on Gotham, and while Snyder would arguably make larger contributions to Batman's lore with storylines like Court of Owls and Death of the Family, the more claustrophobic leanings of his Detective run edges out his later work just about.

For all that the book is genuinely unnerving though, Snyder's grasp on Dick Grayson's Batman is the real highlight. The series is deeply introspective at times, and in nailing Grayson's voice, The Black Mirror provides yet another argument for Batman Reborn being one of the character's best ever periods.
