10 Best Comic First Issues This Week (Dec 19th, 2018)

2. Freedom Fighters #1

Stan Lee Banner
DC Comics

The Third Reich won World War II and became the controlling power of the western world. Seven years after they won, the original Freedom Fighters are still doing their best to stand as a pillar of truth, justice and the American way.

That ends when they are captured by Aryan Plastic Men and executed for all to see on television. Fifty-five years later, the last executioner of the Red Friday Massacre is blown up as a new Human Bomb, along with a black Black Condor, a Doll Woman and a mysterious Phantom Lady stand ready to reclaim America from the Ratzis.

This issue is a perfect way to start a maxiseries. It gives the audience a perfect starting point with the original Freedom Fighters, a personal investment into the story with their execution and the, though brief, introduction to the new Freedom Fighters. One of the greatest triumphs for this is that Robert Venditti could have attempted to draw parallels with current political climes but at least in this first issue, it sticks the landing to hit the ground running.
