10 Best Comic First Issues This Week (Jan 2, 2019)
1. FTL, Y'all!
"Tales from the Age of the $200 Warp Drive" is the premise to this anthology and it is brilliant. Several different creators come in without needing to share universes but rather simply make short works based on that tagline. One child uses a clothes dryer because they can, another builds the tiniest ship to be able to escape a fascist police force.
With the sheer amount of different takes on this, it is hard to keep a singular focus to express why this is such a wonderful work. No two writers in this anthology handle the premise the same. "Last Exit", for example, has the protagonists leaving a cramped Earth only to be put in debt and become indentured servants on an equally cramped space station.
Another, M.S.P.I.P.S.P., goes for a lighter tone - treating the wonders of traveling to other planets as eventful as taking a family trip to Hull.
The diversity in the tales told, with the variety of tones, art styles, and narrations present, makes this truly a special comic and the best of this week.
