10 Best Comic First Issues This Week (Jan 2, 2019)

6. Aspen Visions: Executive Assistant: Iris #1

Wolverine Long Night
Aspen Comics

Executive Assistant: Iris is a typical espionage-assassin series, with the titular Iris basically acting as a fixer and agent in a modern setting, so when Aspen Visions moves the character into being a general battling the Huns and a dragon in ancient China, it definitely raises some eyebrows.

Blake Northcott portrays Iris in her badass best as a general, but it is the ending, where the reader learns at the same time as Iris that not all is as it seems. It is a great hook that sucks the reader into the crux of the three-part crossover between the best sellers of Aspen Comics. The art by Donny Tran captures the feel of Ancient China perfectly, even when Nestor the fire-breathing dragon shows up. The realistic art style solidifies the grounded nature of the story and the twist as well.

The only real negative of this piece is that it is definitely part one of an event rather than a typical first issue, but it's a book worth checking out all the same.
