7. Steampunk Eddie #1

Wolverine Long Night
Escapist Comix/J. Rutland

An average boy, able to pick his locker's lock right after getting an F on a history report, spends his days playing with his dog and watching the skies. All of that changes when a UFO crashes and out pops a flying robot friend. He repairs the robot and in return, the robot zaps Eddie and his dog to the past with arrows raining down on their heads.

This is a truly delightful title. Ted Kendrick's scripting on this makes Eddie out to be average but not a dumb kid. This doesn't turn into a Mr. Peabody and Sherman knock-off at any time but what it does do is introduce Eddie and the robotic bat-thing to be able to move forward with them in the next issue.

While the writing is good, the art is what makes this title. J. Rutland's tight angular art, sepia-tone coloring with only the electric blue of the robot's eyes breaking up that color brings out the steampunk nature of the title and keeps things endearing from start to finish.
