Stan Lee and Jack Kirby reinvented the comic book medium in 1961 with the Fantastic Four. These giants of the industry crafted 102 consecutive issues of Marvel's flagship book at the time, all while creating one of the greatest runs in comics history.

With more than just the Four themselves, a plethora of new characters that are still major players today originate during this run. The first appearances of characters like Black Panther, Doctor Doom, Namor, and the Inhumans are so compellingly told that they became part of the fabric at Marvel. The sheer magnitude of characters that emerge from this run is a testament to the nearly immeasurable quality of these comics.

The quality of the book stands out with the infamous Galactus Trilogy, a story that changed comic books forever. With the apocalyptic threat to the Marvel Universe from an indifferent cosmic entity, Galactus redefines comic book storytelling. From that point on comics could be more than simple morality tales, but could have stories which revealed literary themes and complexity.

While the series does have some slumps in it, Lee and Kirby were moulding a universe unlike anything that had ever been done before it. The amount of creativity and originality found in this run is unfathomable - two of the greatest creators of the comics industry both working at the pinnacle of their talent shines through with some truly unforgettable comics.

The cover of the Fantastic Four always boasted that they were the World's Greatest Comics Magazine, and for years, that was true.
