10 Best Female Characters In The Batman Universe

7. Renee Montoya

Stephanie Brown Batgirl
DC Comics

Renee Montoya is another character set to appear in Birds of Prey, though it appears we’re getting the earlier version of the character. Initially, Montoya was a beat cop, forced out when it was discovered that she was a lesbian.

The story serves as a reminder of how rare and groundbreaking queer characters in comics were, even ten years after her original introduction in 1992. After her time on the GCPD, Montoya ran into the original Question, Vic Sage, and became his successor after the vigilante's passing during 2007's 52.

Supporting comic book characters often need to evolve if they’re to remain relevant, and Montoya offers one of the best examples of this. She's gone from strength to strength since, returning in her Question identity in the pages of Lois Lane, written by Greg Rucka.

No trace of her Question storyline appears to be in the upcoming Birds Of Prey, but that doesn't mean it couldn't happen in the future...
