10 Best Female Characters In The Batman Universe

8. Kate Kane

Stephanie Brown Batgirl
DC Comics

Kate Kane, best known as Batwoman, has gotten off to a slightly rocky start in her live action television adaptation, struggling to find an audience. Though she is a solid character in the comics, she’s been used rather sparingly and with Batman averse to help, she hasn’t been propped up by the male equivalent in the ways you might have thought.

She too is a wealthy heiress, being inspired by Batman rather than receiving any sort of mentorship. Though the female riff on an established male character is much more of a classic comic book move, Kane didn’t actually debut until 2006 with the 52 arc.

The decision was taken to create Batwoman over rebooting over concerns a new Batgirl would crowd out Barbara Gordon (more on her soon) in her new role as Oracle. Batwoman has always been in a bit of a tight spot then, in Batman’s shadow but cut off from the signal boost he could give her.

Much like the next entry on the list, Kane’s sexuality was much discussed at the time, with Kane openly lesbian, moving away from the Kathy Kane side character of the Silver Age, who was an uninspired love interest for Batman.
