10 Best First Comic Book Issues From This Week (Dec 5, 2018)

8. Shazam! #1

Immortal Hulk
DC Comics

The biggest complaint from many about Captain Marvel post-New 52 was that there was no fun and even Billy Batson's backstory was given a darker overhaul. However, between the DC Rebirth initiative and the upcoming Shazam! movie, it looks as though the character is back to his fun, dorky best.

Geoff Johns pens his almost-apologetic second round with Shazam! and the Shazam! family to keep the New 52 origin but melt away the jerky nature of Billy from that run in a callback to the character's Golden Age. A big reason all of this works is the story is not trying to be a grand over-sized world-ending event, but instead one that focusesin on the dynamics of the super-powered family of friends.

Dale Eaglesham's art adjusts the look of the Big Red Boyscout to better fit Zachary Levi's look from the upcoming film but not enough to give it a tie-in comic aesthetic. He also brings an old school spark to the comic with striking and detailed body types, and framework reminiscent of cinematic layouts.

Be it old fans who want to see the return of a fan-favorite character, or new readers coming in just because there's a movie coming, this is the perfect example of a first issue and a great jumping-on point at that.
