After the Onslaught event most of Marvel’s top heroes were dead, or more accurately, in a parallel universe. Into this heroic vacuum, Marvel would deliver a new team of heroes called The Thunderbolts.

The book would be written by Kurt Busiek and feature art by Mark Bagley. This entirely new team of heroes would take over from the recently departed Avengers.

The first issue was what everyone expected - a prototypical story introducing each member of the team battling some new threat. Only for the creative team to pull the rug, revealing to completely unsuspecting readers this new team were really the Masters of Evil, the Thunderbolts having duped not only the readers but the fictional Marvel universe as well.
