When fans heard that Marvel were going to launch a new Spider-Man title for the 21st century, featuring a teenage Peter Parker in the present day, they took it about as well as you would expect. Coming off the high-profile disaster that was John Byrne's Spider-Man: Chapter One, another attempt at rebooting the web-slinger for the modern age, did not help matters.

For all the momentum the "Not my Spider-Man" movement was gaining it was quickly undercut by the arrival of Indy darling and soon-to-be Daredevil writer Brian Michael Bendis. Teaming him with long time Marvel artist Mark Bagley was enough to convince even the most jaded fans to give the title a shot.

Bendis may have taken six issues to tell the same story that Lee and Ditko did in 10 pages, but he and Bagley wisely spent the first issue introducing readers to their Peter Parker. The creators took the time to show readers what was different about this Peter and why they should care.

The fact the two men would be on the title for a further 110 issues proved their success.
