Over the years, Marvel and DC have both struggled with introducing new characters who were not part of an already existing franchise. Introducing new members of the Avengers or the X-Men is simple. Creators usually spin new characters out of a crossover or event book, such as Spider-Gwen from Spider-Verse.
Creating an entirely new team of heroes with no connection to the larger Marvel universe AND have them be a hit seemed to be an impossibility. Enter Brian K Vaughan, the superstar writer behind the likes of Y the Last Man and Saga.
As part of Marvel's ill-fated Tsunami line, an attempt to attract manga readers to comics, Vaughan came up with a story about the children of supervillains.
While most of life in the Marvel Universe takes place on the east coast, the story of the criminal syndicate and cult, the Pride, battling their errant offspring would occur in Los Angeles. The first issue introduces this new cast, discovering their parents' dark secret, and skilfully asks the question, "what would you do if you found out your parents were evil?"
