10 Best Modern Age Marvel #1 Comics

3. Captain America #1

Ultimate Spider-Man 1 1280 720
Marvel Comics / Steve Epting

To say that Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting had the most significant impact on Captain America since Joe Simon and Jack Kirby would not be under selling it. In the wake of the Disassembled event, the title was every bit as lost as the Avengers themselves. Except for Mark Gruenwald, no one had any idea what to do with Capitan America when he was not leading the Avengers - least of all Marvel comics.

The title had gone through a slew of creative teams, each with its own take on Cap. But none of them could make their changes stick or the supposed new direction work. Brubaker and Epting changed the focus of the book from Captain America to Steve Rogers. The creators' approach was to frame him more like a contemporary super spy than the outdated all-American poster boy he was viewed as.

This first issue sets the tone perfectly for everything that is to come. It lays out mysteries, agendas, new characters and reminds readers just how badass Cap can be. All of this is then topped off with a genuinely jaw-dropping final page that guaranteed readers would be back for issue two.
