8. Calling Doctor Death
Snyder goes way back into Batman history for his origin story, taking one of the first villains he ever faced and putting him into New 52 continuity as one of Batman's first villains as well. Doctor Death, aka Dr Karl Helfern, first appeared in Detective Comics #29 in July 1939. A mad scientist character, Snyder beefs him up in his story whose experiments in creating super-hard human skeletons (referring to Helfern's research, it's mentioned that one of the benefits would be a human skull being more sturdy than an army helmet, and there are flashbacks in other issues to soldiers in a desert country warzone focusing on a soldier's helmet) have turned him into a grotesque monster. Death provides the physical challenge to Batman in this part of the story which Riddler can't provide, and distracts Batman long enough for Riddler's plan of destroying Gotham can be successfully accomplished. He's also strikingly designed by Capullo look at those teeth!
