10 Best New Marvel Characters Of The 21st Century

4. Wiccan

Spider-Man Miles Morales
Marvel Comics

Wiccan just edges it ahead of X-23 in the mutant stakes, and although he’s not a major character, he’s been able to shine with every appearance. He’s kind of the opposite of Kate Bishop in that way, as his lesser status has allowed Marvel to stretch him more, less restricted by narrative duties.

A member of the Young Avengers, most of Wiccan’s best work comes in offshoots from the main storylines. This includes discovering he’s Speed’s brother, working with Speed to find Scarlet Witch (their mother), his blossoming relationship with Hulkling, and generally struggling with his powers.

This last one is particularly important as lots of modern heroes get thrown in at the deep end with lightning paced stories. Wiccan though slows things down as we see him coming to terms with his own mutation.

His design takes the stuff which works on his mother while ditching what doesn’t to give him an ethereal, understated look. Despite being Vision’s son, there’s more of Thor in his aesthetic, but those flourishes really tie the look together.

Diversity on its own means very little; however, the fact Wiccan is bullied for his homosexuality and struggles with his own self worth makes this a much richer portrayal.
