Steve Rogers went through an experiment for the U.S. Army, as they hoped to create a super soldier. The super serum used on him did just that, giving us the hero known as Captain America.

A man by the name of Red Skull, and the leader of HYDRA, also managed to get his hands on the same serum, and nearly changed the landscape of World War II. Cap and Skull battled often, until the former was stranded in the Arctic while trying to defuse a Nazi superweapon.

Cap survived and came back later on to fight several other enemies like Arnim Zola, Baron von Strucker, Baron Zemo, Serpent Society, Red Guardian, Superia, and M.O.D.O.K., as well as the new-look form of HYDRA.

Of course, one of his biggest enemies was his best friend, Bucky Barnes. Bucky fell to his death in the same accident that put Rogers on ice, with Steve unable to save him. It turns out he was actually saved by HYDRA, who then give him the same super-soldier serum Cap had. They then brainwashed him.

This turned him into “The Winter Soldier,” a Cold War assassin. The two come to blows in The Winter Soldier story-arc for a while until Bucky remembered Steve, and eventually becomes Cap himself.
