Warner Bros. were in the process of making/developing The New Adventures Of Superman, and DC found themselves at a crossroads. Their version of the Big Blue Boy Scout had been featuring more and more romance and to keep WB happy they had to put it on the back burner, so what to do? Well, Jerry Ordway joked "Let's Just kill him", and from there the Doomsday story was born.

Urban legend or not, killing off Superman was a hell of a risk, but one that was worth it as it quickly became the best selling comic book of all time.

However, this actually left DC with an even bigger problem - how to bring the Man of Steel back.

During The Reign of The Supermen - and with Big Blue out to pasture - four new Supermen arrive to protect the city to varying degrees of success. It eventually turns out that one of the Supermen - a cyborg - was a villain, and with Metropolis under threat, Kal-El rises and helps defend his adopted city with a nice new black suit and a fantastic mullet.
