This mini-series marked the beginning of Simon Furman’s run. It stands out largely because it takes the Autobot-Decepticon war everyone knows and loves, and completely changes the playing board.
Because here, instead of reducing mountainsides to rubble or setting seas on fire, the two sides are locked in a chess match. Both groups are stationed on Earth and in hiding. Such were the circumstances, they prioritized their secrecy above all else.
This meant neither could engage their enemy head-on. Both camps planned and plotted, waiting for an opening. Ultimately, something completely unexpected happened that forced them into action: three humans accidentally found access to some top secret Decepticon info.
Unable to stand and watch them get trampled, the Autobots, and in particular Ratchet, came out of hiding in order to protect them.
