5. Stormbringer

Transformers Optimus Prime IDW
IDW Publishing

One of the things the Transformers franchise does really well is explore the adverse effects of war, physically, emotionally, and environmentally.

Stormbringer focuses largely on the latter two. Long ago, realizing that this raging war was bound to destroy Cybertron, the Decepticon Thunderwing comes up with a plan to tackle the inevitable catastrophe.

After being rebuked by his peers, Thunderwing invents a bio-mechanical exoskeleton that could be attached to the bodies of other Transformers. His first test subject was none other than himself. While his invention achieved one of its goals in imbuing him with tremendous power, it came at the cost of his sanity.

Thunderwing’s rampage was eventually stopped by an emergency alliance between the Autobots and Decepticons. However, the demons of the past soon resurface in the present, as Thunderwing is revived by the fanatical Bludgeon.

Once more, both Autobots and Decepticons are forced to work towards a common goal, a battle that eventually takes all parties to Earth.
