Then:

Buffy’s defining relationships in the original series were with vampires. Much of the drama in the show’s first two seasons resulted from the relationship between the teenage slayer and the former Angelus. Spike and Buffy’s relationship developed in the later seasons of the show. Teenage Buffy’s relationship with the (as of the 1997 pilot) 270-year-old Angel is easily perceived as icky.

Now:

Buffy meets her love interest Robin Wood at track. Robin was a character in the original series, however, here he is recast as a teenage student. The two Robins share some similarities such as having a slayer for a mother. Buffy is every bit the awkward teenager during their first date, a funny and relatable contrast to her confidence in the field. However, Robin is revealed to be a member of The Council and an active Watcher for another slayer.

Though Buffy and Angel battle through the Hellmouth together, they have a more competitive relationship going only as far as friendly banter. Meanwhile Spike is attracted to Cordelia but still in love with Drusilla.
