Then:

Willow’s aptitude for magic grows as the show progresses. A slow burn is ideal for TV but not comics. She began studying magic in season two, finding inspiration from the belongings left behind by murdered teacher and technopagan Jenny Calendar. Willow’s powers grew and she became one of the Whedonverse’s strongest characters.

Now:

Willow has a keen interest in witchcraft from the comics outset. In Buffy #3, she begins the practical part of her enlightenment, helping Giles with a charm for Bat-demon Camazotz. In issue six, she creates a soul tie by sacrificing half of her own soul to the Siphon (“demon snake woman”).

As one consequence, Dark Willow, the true Big Bad of season six, appears to Willow in a nightmare. She refers to herself as “the better you – the juicy part that makes you competitive, quick, and astute…You surrendered the only part that could protect us – that could protect them”.

After being dragged through loss and tragedy, Willow leaves Sunnydale for a break abroad. She studies magic in an English coven community. This adventure is the basis for the five-part miniseries Willow.
