The TV show makes the concept of a Slayer clear: “Into every generation a slayer is born: one girl in all the world, a chosen one […] She is the Slayer". However, Buffy temporarily dying called up Kendra. Kendra’s death called up Faith. And Willow’s magic activated every potential slayer.
Now:
Kendra arrives in Sunnydale during Buffy #9. She is slightly older than the central characters and resents Robin, “some 16-year-old kid”, being her Watcher. She initially riles up Willow and Xander accidently using her calling up as proof of Buffy’s death. Anya soon corrects her. There is more than one slayer, because when Buffy entered the Hellmouth, she left “this mortal plane”.
Despite entering the Hellmouth to help Buffy, things between the OG Slayer and Kendra are prickly. Robin reasons that Buffy doesn’t like herself and “Kendra is just the closest thing to [her] that [she’s] ever met”. However, the two become friends, bonding while training together to prepare to take on the Big Bad.
The last panel of the most recent issue (Buffy #19) marked
the arrival of Faith to Sunnydale.
