Amazing Spider-Man #121 may have been the most shocking comic twist ever thrown at readers of the time. While waiting for Peter Parker in his apartment, his girlfriend Gwen Stacy was surprised by the sudden intrusion of the Green Goblin. Gwen fought in vain but the Goblin knocked her out with gas from one of his pumpkins and left it in the mess for Spider-Man to find.

The Green Goblin took Gwen to the top of the Brooklyn Bridge and, despite being very ill, Spider-Man tracked them there. The pair fought and the Goblin revealed Spider-Man’s identity as Peter Parker. Gwen was shocked as she blamed him for the death of her police captain father and now discovered that the Wall-crawler was actually the man she loved.

The Goblin threw Gwen off of the bridge and Spidey shot a web that grabbed her leg, but her neck snapped from the sudden stop and she died. Peter swore vengeance on the Goblin and beat him near to death but stopped short of killing him. Norman impaled himself with his Glider when Web-head leaped out of the way.

The “Snap!” sound effect was tiny but it was deafening to readers of the time. It was shocking to see the hero fail to save the woman he loved. This one moment stuck with many readers to this day.
