10 Biggest Iron Man Plot Twists

4. Tony Stark Was Designed By An Alien Robot

Iron Man
Marvel Comics

It's fair to say that Tony Stark can occasionally come across as an unrealistic character. It's not just because he owns hundreds of mechanised exoskeletons and tussles with intergalactic threats on a daily basis - it's also the fact that he is impossibly intelligent, talented, charismatic, and wonderfully witty, all at the same time. How could such a man ever come into existence?

Unless... He was designed to be that way? Obviously he was designed to be that way by all the writers and artists who have worked on his character over the years. But what if there was an in-world explanation? What if Tony Stark had not only been designed with pencils and ink, but with futuristic genetic engineering? As it turns out, that may have been the case.

In the Secret Origin of Tony Stark storyline, we meet Recorder 451, a sentient robot and a bit of a control freak. As it turns out, he has been linked to the Stark family for years. While Tony's mother was pregnant, some health complications made it clear that the baby would not survive birth. 451 offered the Starks a deal: he could ensure their baby would lead a full and healthy life, if they allowed him to genetically engineer it into being a hyper-intelligent genius with a penchant for building weapons that could protect the Earth from alien invaders.

Little did we know, this twist was to be followed by an even BIGGER twist...
