8. The Turtles Deal With Parental Abuse - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012) #1
While the turtle comics deal with a surprising range of serious topics - from death to how much Hitler deserved a good punching - it's likely nobody was expecting them to tackle the arduous matter of parental abuse.
And yet, IDW's run of TMNT begins with Casey Jones - who would go on to be a steadfast companion of the turtles - being beaten by his father for the cardinal sin of basically existing. Raphael stumbles upon this scene, and does exactly what you'd expect the hot-headed terrapin to do, attacking Casey's father in retaliation.
Though the turtles are no stranger to sensitive topics, the speed at which this first issue goes from cowabunga-level fun to heartbreak could easily give you whiplash.
