10 Changes That Totally Ruined Comic Book Characters

4. Starfire

Originally conceived of as Red Sonja in outer space, Starfire debuted in the pages of the Teen Titans. Princess Koriand'r of Tamaran was enslaved after her planet was conquered. She managed to escape to Earth where she discovered the Teen Titans and joined them, forming a deep romantic relationship with Robin (Dick Grayson). Although Starfire was always depicted as a character deeply in touch with her emotions and more sexually liberated than most characters, the New 52€™s Red Hood and the Outlaws series took this to a new extreme. Writer Scott Lobdell and artist Kenneth Rocafort put an over-emphasis on Starfire€™s sexuality. While Starfire€™s costume has always been revealing, Rocafort took it to a new level. Both in and out of costume, there is a lot of emphasis on Starfire€™s sexuality. The writing goes along with this. In the first issue, Starfire has no memory of Roy Harper, Dick Grayson, or any of her friends from the Teen Titans. This was justified as Tamaraneans having a short attention span in regards to all things Earth, believing humans to be little more than sensory experiences. Starfire€™s personality has been completely rewritten, making her extremely cold and lifeless. She€™s essentially turned into nothing more than a sex doll for both the Red Hood and Arsenal. Although it has since been revealed that Starfire was lying about her memories and that she in fact simply represses them, the portrayal has been incredibly damaging to her character and is sadly in line with how a lot of female characters in the New 52 are treated.
