10 Characters Who Replaced Captain America

1. Sam Wilson

Bucky Barnes as Captain America
Marvel Comics

The most recent Captain America, Sam Wilson fought crime for years as Cap's partner Falcon. When the super-soldier serum in his blood ran out, leaving Steve an old man, he asked his longtime friend to take over the mantle.

Sam has proved himself to be a capable hero in his new role, even leading the Avengers. However, his time as Captain America has been marked with controversy, both in and out of story.

Whereas Steve Rogers was always careful to remain politically neutral, Sam Wilson hasn't been afraid to speak up on issues like immigration and share his strongly liberal views. This has garnered a lot of criticism from those who either don't share those views, or who believe that Captain America should remain neutral.

This stance has also distanced him from Steve, especially since his youth was restored by the sentient cosmic cube Kobik. Sam is also currently unaware that Steve had his past rewritten by Kobik to turn him into a sleeper agent for Hydra. This seems to be about to change though with the upcoming even Secret Empire, which will pit the two Captain Americas against each other.

If Chris Evans does retire from playing Captain America, it seems a good bet that either Sam or Bucky will be the one to replace him.
