10 Comic Announcements From Comic-Con 2014 You Need To Know‏

8. Plus Spider-Woman Nets A Solo Book

Spider-Man has born out derivative characters in his own universe, mind, including scores of Spider-Women since the original Jessica Drew donned the outfit and name all the way back in 1977. There's been at least four more female wall crawlers since then but Jessica got returned to the role in Brian Michael Bendis' New Avengers book, from which she got spun out into an eight-issue limited series by Bendis and artist Alex Maleev. Since then, though, Spider-Woman has pretty much just existed as part of the ensemble cast of various Avengers titles. She's never had a proper, ongoing solo title of her own...until now. One of the other big announcements during Comic-Con was that Marvel were launching a Spider-Woman series alongside Spider-Verse in November. There have been three previous attempts to give Jessica Drew her own book (and five solo Spider-Woman titles overall) but hopefully this one will actually stick, with Avengers Undercover writer Dennis Hopeless and Mighty Avengers artist Greg Land on board. Actually, calling it a solo series is something of a misnomer, since the Spider-Woman will be joined by another spider-woman in the book - during the recent Original Sin series and tie-in storylines, which saw some of the darkest and previously unmentioned mysteries in the Marvel Universe coming to the surface, it turned out Peter Parker wasn't the only person bitten by that radioactive spider and given awesome superpowers. She calls herself Silk, and she'll be joining Spider-Woman for at least the opening arc of what will hopefully be a long and fruitful series. Fifth time's the charm?
