10 Comic Book Characters Who Keep Changing Identities
6. Steve Rogers - Four Superhero Identities
Steve Rogers is one of the oldest characters in Marvel Comics' library, and he's well known to be the star-spangled hero, Captain America, but he's tried on a few different names over the years. A name change usually came with a change in his status or his belief that he needed a new identity.
Now, Rogers has been called many things from the "Sentinel of Liberty" to the "Man out of Time" to the "Living Legend," but these are more in the line of honorifics than a real identity. Those changes were often more semi-permanent, and they usually came with a costume change.
Cap retired his Captain America following the Watergate Scandal. He became disillusioned with the American ideal and retired until Hawkeye convinced him to continue the fight. He did so as Nomad. He remained Nomad until the new Captain America was killed by the Red Skull. He realized that he was a powerful symbol and took up the mantle once more.
Other events later cause Steve to turn in his Captain America identity to become solely, "The Captain." Later, he became the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. with the title of "Top Cop" before finally returning to be called Captain America once more.
