10 Comic Book Covers That Totally Lied To You

8. Fantastic Four Vs. X-Men #2

Daredevil #179
Marvel Comics

Marvel Comics has had some extraordinary teams over the years, and if you had to pick the top three, the Fantastic Four, Avengers, and the X-Men would all find themselves on that list. Back in 1987, Marvel decided it was time to make two of those teams fight one another.

That's what happened in the four-issue miniseries, Fantastic Four vs. X-Men, and most of the covers were rather misleading. The conflict arose when Mister Fantastic opted not to help Kitty Pryde because he believed he lacked the necessary powers to help her in his lab, so the X-Men turned to Dr. Doom.

This brought the two teams into conflict, and they did fight one another in this issue, but not in the way depicted on the cover. The full cover art includes a smiling Dr. Doom in the background as Wolverine stands over the corpses of Reed Richards and Susan Storm while Franklin cries.

Wolverine says, "Your mother's been avenged, okay, kid?" In the book, Wolverine doesn't stab and kill Reed Richards, he doesn't explain to Franklin that his mother's death was avenged, and Susan Storm wasn't even in the fight, nor did she die.
