Thomas Stanford Lyle passed away in mid-November at the age of 66. He was best known for his work illustrating numerous titles for both DC Comics and Marvel Comics. Lyle passed after a brain aneurism in October required surgery and a medically-induced coma. Dan Slott, a longtime friend, and writer of Spider-Man took to Twitter to express his sadness:

"Sorry to hear that legendary Spider-Man artist, Tom Lyle has passed away. Tom's work on both Spidey and the Scarlet Spider were epic. That Scarlet Spider design, Tom's design, will always be an amazing touchstone for Spidey fans like me and all generations past, present, & future."

Lyle began working in the industry as an illustrator in the 1980s on several titles for Eclipse Comics, including Airboy, Strike!, and Airwolf. Between 1988 and 1990, he worked for DC Comics, having helped pencil the Starman series, and he followed this with the first solo Robin series, as well as its two sequels.

For Marvel Comics, Lyle illustrated many of the books in both the "Maximum Carnage" and "Clone Sage" storylines for Spider-Man. He also created the Scarlet Spider's costume, which included a blue hoodie and red spandex suit. Beginning in 2005, he taught sequential art at the Savannah College of Art and Design. He remained in that position until his passing.
