6. The Ancient One (Yao)

The Ancient One €“ soon to be gender-swapped and played by Tilda Swinton in the MCU €“ was Earth€™s Sorcerer Supreme before Doctor Strange took up the mantle. She taught both Stephen Strange and his nemesis Baron Moro in the ways of the mystic arts. Years later, The Ancient One died.

This transpired because an extra-dimensional demon called Shuma-Gorath had kidnapped The Ancient One and wanted to force him into serving as a gateway and allow it passage to Earth. Knowing the terror this would cause, The Ancient One ordered Doctor Strange to kill him and thwart Shuma-Gorath€™s plan. The death of the mentor figure is an archetype of storytelling, so this shouldn€™t come as too much of a surprise.

If anything, it€™s more shocking that it took Marvel a period of several years to get around to killing The Ancient One once Strange€™s training was complete. Like Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars, The Ancient One has popped up a couple of times since undergoing mortal death. He€™s never technically returned from the grave, but he has made spirit-style cameos.
