In 2012's Avengers vs X-Men #1, The Avengers were understandably concerned when they detected the Phoenix Force returning to Earth. However, the X-Men, and especially Cyclops, considered it their personal business to deal with Phoenix as it had been so inextricably tied to Jean Grey and her descendants. By AvX #11, this disagreement devolved into an all-out war between the two teams of heroes. However, when the force landed and divided among five X-Men, several mutants switched sides.

On Utopia, the island home of the X-Men just off San Francisco, Scott Summers noticed Xavier standing on the beach. Possessing four of the five parts of the Phoenix Force, Scott confronted Xavier who offered to help his former student. Summers denied his offer and Emma Frost warned him that Xavier was preparing to stop him. Cyclops generated a fireball but found that he couldn’t move, and the entire assembled team of the Avengers and the X-Men attacked them.

Scott unleashed an optic blast but it was stopped by Captain America’s shield. Scarlet Witch attacked Ckyke until she herself was attacked with fire by Emma Frost. The Hulk retaliated by pounding Frost into the sand with both fists and took her out into the ocean. After fighting off Magneto, Thor, Hawkeye, and Iceman, Cyclops turned his attention back toward Xavier. Taking the final piece of the Phoenix Force from Emma, Charles yelled “That is enough.” Scott agreed that it was and killed Xavier.

Thor said Cyclops must be stopped. Captain America said it was too late. The Dark Phoenix was here.
