Ares never wanted to be in the Avengers in the first place. He just wanted to stay under the radar, raise his son, and complete a day’s work. But Iron Man wouldn’t let him. With the implementation of the new Super Human Registration Act, Tony made Ares join his New York-based team of Avengers or he threatened to tell Zeus where Ares had been hiding.

Ares found he liked Avenging and it didn’t matter to him when Norman Osborn took over as the head of the team. Osborn told the War God what he wanted to hear, gave him plenty of people to hit with fewer rules about force than Iron Man, and with Osborn, the chauvinist god wouldn’t have to take orders from a woman, as he did from field leader Black Widow in Stark’s Avengers. In 2010's Siege #2, during the violent Siege on Asgard, Ares found out that Norman had been lying to him to get him to attack his former allies and fellow deities, and the honorable Olympian was enraged.

On his way to attack and kill Osborn, the Sentry blocked Ares. Despite the legendary power of the God of War, it was nothing to someone powered by “a thousand exploding suns” - as Reynolds grabbed Ares and ripped him completely in two.

The horrifying sight stopped all the other combatants in their tracks.
